Sulfamethoxazole competitively inhibits dihydropteroate synthase, the enzyme responsible for bacterial dihydrofolic acid synthesis.
Trimethoprim binds to dihydrofolate reductase and inhibits the reduction of dihydrofolic acid (DHF) to tetrahydrofolic acid (THF).
Inhibition of this pathway prevents the synthesis of tetrahydrofolate and, ultimately, the synthesis of bacterial purines and DNA, resulting in a bacteriostatic effect.
Tetrahydrofolate is an essential precursor in the thymidine synthesis pathway and interference with this pathway inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis.

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Make sure that you finish the course of Co-Trimoxazole which your doctor has prescribed
The dose of Co-Trimoxazole and how long you need to take it depends on the type of the infection and its severity
Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:

High levels of potassium in your blood which can cause abnormal heartbeats (palpitations).
A fungal infection called thrush or candidiasis which can affect your mouth or vagina.
Headache
Feeling sick (nausea)
Diarrhea
Skin rashes

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you have a disease called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, which can cause jaundice or spontaneous destruction of red blood cells.
If you have a problem with your metabolism called phenylketonuria and are not on a special diet to help your condition.
If you are elderly.
If you are underweight or malnourished

A rectal temperature is 0.5 F (0.3 C) to 1 F (0.6 C) higher than an oral temperature.
An ear (tympanic) temperature is 0.5 F (0.3 C) to 1 F (0.6 C) higher than an oral temperature.
