Xylometazoline is a decongestant used for reducing nasal congestion caused by allergies or the common cold.
Xylometazoline causes blood vessels in the nasal passages to shrink (vasoconstrictor).
Vasoconstriction reduces nasal congestion by preventing fluid from draining from blood vessels into nasal passages.

Nasal congestion (blocked nose, including colds).
Perennial and allergic rhinitis (recurring inflammation of the nasal mucous membranes, including hay fever).
Sinusitis (to aid drainage of secretions in affections of paranasal sinuses).
As an adjuvant in otitis media, to decongest the nasopharyngeal mucosa.

Do not use Otrivin if your child is under 6 years old.
Do not use if you are allergic to xylometazoline or any other ingredients of this medicine.
Do not use if you have undergone recent trans-nasal surgery (brain surgery carried out through the nose or mouth).
Do not use if you have narrow-angle glaucoma (increased pressure in the eyes).
Do not use if you have chronic nasal inflammation with very dry nasal passages (rhinitis sicca or atrophic rhinitis).

Do not get Otrivin in the mouth or eyes.

Inhale steam: Take a hot shower or inhale steam from boiled water.
Use a humidifier to loosen mucus.
Avoid inhaled irritants such as dust, perfumes, or pollutants. Wear a face mask to reduce exposure.
Stopping smoking will help reduce airway inflammation.
Lozenges like Strepsils soothe an irritated throat.

Inform your doctor if you have or have had a peptic ulcer.
Use with caution if you have hypertension or any heart diseases.
