Linagliptin is an inhibitor of DPP-4, an enzyme that degrades the incretin hormones glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Incretins help the body produce more insulin only when it is needed and reduce the amount of glucose being produced by the liver when it is not needed.

Your doctor has prescribed this medicine to help lower your blood sugar, which is too high because of your diabetes.
This medicine can be used alone or in combination with certain other medicines (insulin, metformin, sulphonylureas, or glitazones) that lower blood sugar, which you may already be taking for your diabetes together with a food and exercise plan.

The recommended dose of Linagliptin is one 5 mg tablet once a day.
You can take Linagliptin with or without food. Your doctor may prescribe Linagliptin together with another oral anti-diabetic medicine. Remember to take all medicines as directed by your doctor to achieve the best results for your health.
Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

Eat more fruit and vegetables. This can help you get the vitamins, minerals, and fiber your body needs every day to help keep you healthy.

If you experience symptoms of hypoglycemia such as weakness, dizziness, increased sweating, fast heart beating, vision disorders or difficulty in concentration, it usually helps to eat or drink something containing sugar.

Have type 1 diabetes (your body does not produce any insulin) or diabetic ketoacidosis (a complication of diabetes with high blood sugar, rapid weight loss, nausea or vomiting).
Are taking an anti-diabetic medicine known as a ‘sulphonylurea’ (e.g. Glimepiride, glipizide), your doctor may want to reduce your dose of sulfonylurea when you take it together with Linagliptin in order to avoid your blood sugar going too low.
Have had allergic reactions to any other medicines that you take to control the amount of sugar in your blood.
Have or have had a disease of the pancreas.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.

Random blood sugar test: A blood sample will be taken at a random time. Regardless of when you last ate, a blood sugar level of 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or higher suggests diabetes. A blood sugar level less than 140 mg/dL is normal. A reading between 140 and 199 mg/dL indicates prediabetes
Fasting blood sugar test. A blood sample will be taken after an overnight fast. A fasting blood sugar level less than 100 mg/dl is normal. A fasting blood sugar level from 100 to 125 mg/dL is considered prediabetes. If it's 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests, you may have diabetes.
Oral glucose tolerance test: For this test, you fast overnight, and the fasting blood sugar level is measured. Then you drink a sugary liquid, and blood sugar levels are tested periodically for the next two hours.
