Montelukast is in the leukotriene receptor antagonist family of medications.
It works by blocking the action of leukotriene D4 in the lungs resulting in decreased inflammation and relaxation of smooth muscle.

Your doctor has prescribed Montelukast to treat asthma, preventing your asthma symptoms during the day and night.
Montelukast is used for the treatment of adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older who are not adequately controlled on their medication and need additional therapy.
Montelukast also helps prevent the narrowing of airways triggered by exercise.
In those asthmatic patients in whom Montelukast is indicated in asthma, Montelukast can also provide symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Doses will depend on your medical condition
For adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older: The recommended dose is one 10 mg tablet to be taken daily in the evening.
You can take Montelukast 10 mg with or without food
Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:

Abdominal pain
Headache
Allergic reactions
Behavior and mood-related changes: agitation including aggressive behavior or depression
Palpitations

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breast-feeding

Avoid your triggers; taking steps to reduce your exposure to asthma triggers is a key part of asthma control.
Use your air conditioner. Air conditioning reduces the amount of airborne pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds that finds its way indoors
Clean regularly. Clean your home at least once a week.
Get regular exercise. Having asthma doesn't mean you have to be less active. Treatment can prevent asthma attacks and control symptoms during activity.

Control heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It's possible that the acid reflux that causes heartburn may damage lung airways and worsen asthma symptoms
Breathing exercises. These exercises may reduce the amount of medication you need to keep your asthma symptoms under control.

If your asthma or breathing gets worse, tell your doctor immediately.
Oral Montelukast is not meant to treat acute asthma attacks. If an attack occurs, follow the instructions your doctor has given you. Always have your inhaled rescue medicine for asthma attacks with you.
It is important that you or your child take all asthma medications prescribed by your doctor. Montelukast should not be substituted for other asthma medications your doctor has prescribed for you.
Any patient on anti-asthma medicines should be aware that if you develop a combination of symptoms such as a flu-like illness, pins and needles or numbness of arms or legs, worsening of pulmonary symptoms, and/or rash, you should consult your doctor.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medications including over-the-counter non-prescription medicines, prescription medicines, herbal supplements, vitamins, and supplements.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
