Rosuvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering medication that belongs to the statin class of drugs. Statins lower cholesterol levels in the blood by blocking 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A(HMG-CoA) reductase, an enzyme that's needed for the liver to produce cholesterol.
Decreased hepatic cholesterol concentrations stimulate the upregulation of hepatic low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors, which increases hepatic uptake of LDL & decreases LDL level in the blood.

It is used to lower lipids known as cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood when a low-fat diet and lifestyle changes on their own have failed.
Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the body necessary for normal growth. However, if there is too much cholesterol in your blood, it can build up on blood vessel walls, increasing the risk of blood clots and cardiovascular events. This is one of the most common causes of heart disease.
You should maintain a standard cholesterol-lowering diet during treatment.

Your treatment with Rosuvastatin must start with the 5 mg or the 10 mg dose, even if you have taken a higher dose of a different statin before. The choice of your start dose will depend upon:
Your cholesterol levels.
The level of risk you have of experiencing a heart attack or stroke.
Whether you have a factor that may make you more sensitive to possible side effects.
Your doctor may decide to increase your dose. The maximum daily dose of Rosuvastatin is 40 mg
Take Rosuvastatin once daily.
You can take it at any time of the day but the most common instruction is to take your statin at night. This is because cholesterol production is thought to be highest at night
You can take the tablets with or without food
Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:

Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, rupture. On rare occasions, these muscle problems can be serious, including muscle breakdown resulting in kidney damage; and very rare deaths have occurred. Ron-Co Q10 Capsules may help to reduce muscle pain
Difficulty in breathing, with or without swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat.
Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, may cause difficulty in swallowing.
Severe itching of the skin (with raised lumps).

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breast-feeding

Reduce saturated fats. Saturated fats, found primarily in red meat and full-fat dairy products, raise your total cholesterol.
Eliminate trans fats. Trans fats, sometimes listed on food labels as "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil," are often used in margarine and store-bought cookies, crackers, and cakes. Trans fats raise overall cholesterol levels.
Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids or use an omega-3 supplement like Omegat Omega 3 Capsules or Paradox Omega 3 Capsules
Increase soluble fiber. Soluble fiber can reduce the absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream. Soluble fiber is found in such foods as oatmeal, kidney beans, Brussels sprouts, apples, and pears.
Exercise on most days of the week and increase your physical activity, work up to at least 30 minutes of exercise five times a week
Quitting smoking improves your HDL cholesterol level.

Sometimes healthy lifestyle changes aren't enough to lower cholesterol levels. If your doctor recommends medication to help lower your cholesterol, take it as prescribed while continuing your lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes can help you keep your medication dose low.

If you have problems with your kidneys.
If you have problems with your liver.
If you have had repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains, a personal or family history of muscle problems, or a previous history of muscle problems when taking other cholesterol-lowering medicines. Tell your doctor immediately if you have unexplained muscle aches or pains, especially if you feel unwell or have a fever.
If your thyroid gland is not working properly.
If you take other medicines called fibrates to lower your cholesterol.
If you take medicines used to treat the HIV infection e.g. ritonavir with lopinavir and/or atazanavir.
If you are taking or have taken in the last 7 days a medicine called fusidic acid (a medicine for bacterial infection), orally or by injection. The combination of fusidic acid and Rosuvastatin can lead to serious muscle problems (rhabdomyolysis).
If you are over 70 (as your doctor needs to choose the right start dose of Rosuvastatin to suit you)
If you have severe respiratory failure.
If you are of Asian origin – that is Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, and Indian.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medications including over-the-counter non-prescription medicines, prescription medicines, herbal supplements, vitamins, and supplements.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
