Mechanism Of Action Of Betamethasone Valerate-Neomycin Sulfate Cream

  • This product consists of two active ingredients; betamethasone valerate and Neomycin sulfate.
  • Betamethasone valerate belongs to a class of medicines known as” topical corticosteroids” that act by reducing inflammation, itchiness, and redness of the skin. Neomycin sulfate is a medicine that belongs to a class known as “aminoglycoside antibiotics” and acts by helping in eradicating the bacteria that may lead to skin infections.

 

Therapeutic Indications Of Betnovate N Ointment

  • This medicine is used to help reduce the redness and itchiness of certain skin problems. These skin problems include eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, lichen simplex chronicus, prurigo nodularis, or insect bites, where an infection may be a problem.
  • Eczema (a common skin disorder that causes the skin to become itchy and red).
  • Nummular dermatitis (chronic skin problem that causes skin itchiness, swelling, and cracking in circular or oval patches)
  • psoriasis (thickened patches of red and inflamed skin, usually covered with silvery scales), excluding widespread plaque psoriasis.
  • lichen planus (red to purple, itchy and flat-topped bumps on the forearms, lower legs, or wrists).
  • allergic skin reaction (e.g. contact dermatitis) due to a substance or an allergen that comes in contact with your skin.
  • otitis externa (inflamed, flaky, and red skin of the outer ear and ear canal).
  • skin reactions due to insect bites.
  • seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly, red, and itchy rash on the scalp, chest, back, and face).
  • prickly heat (skin rash caused by sweat trapped in the skin).
  • genital and anal intertrigo (rash that usually affects skin folds in the vagina or penis due to skin rubbing together and moisture).
  • prurigo nodularis (formation of hard and itchy lumps on the skin).
  • lichen simplex chronicus (patches of itchy, thickened skin from scratching).

 

Method Of Administration Of Betnovate N Ointment

  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
  • Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • The recommended dose:
  • Apply a thin layer of the product and gently massage it into the affected area. Usually, 1 to 2 times per day for up to 7 days.
  • Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
  • If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
  • If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
  • Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

 

Undesirable Side Effects Of Betnovate N Ointment

  • Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:
  1. a feeling of burning, irritation, or itching where the ointment is applied
  2. If you have psoriasis you may get raised bumps with pus under the skin. This can happen during or after the treatment and is known as pustular psoriasis.
  3. Side effects if you use the product for a long time, or you use it a lot each time you apply it, or you apply it under an airtight dressing or a nappy:
  4. stretch marks may develop
  5. veins under the surface of your skin may become more noticeable
  6. increased hair growth and changes in skin color
  7. thinning of your skin that may also damage more easily
  8. weight gain, rounding of the face, and high blood pressure. These are more likely to happen in infants and children.

 

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Precautions While Taking Betnovate N Ointment

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

 

Warnings & Special Precautions while Taking Betnovate N Ointment

  • Stop the medication right away, and talk to your doctor, or pharmacist if you develop any allergic, or skin reactions to any of the ingredients present in this cream/ointment such as
  • skin itchiness, skin redness, shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face, or neck, decreased blood pressure, and dizziness.
  • This medicine is designed for external topical use only. Do not swallow this product.
  • Avoid contact with the cream/ointment with your lips, eyes, mouth, sensitive areas of the neck, and angles of the nose in order to avoid irritation.
  • In case of accidental contact, make sure to rinse the area very well with warm water, and then pat dry.
  • Do not use this product for more than 7 days unless recommended by your doctor.
  • If your skin does not feel better or is getting worse after 7 days, talk to your doctor for re-evaluation.
  • Talk to your doctor if you do not use this product as directed to make sure that he/she does not change you to another therapy thinking that this medicine did not work for you.
  • Do not share this medicine with anyone else even if they have the same signs.
  • Do not use tight-fitting nappies, or plastic pants if this product is to be used on the nappy area of young children.
  • You are at higher risk of developing an allergic reaction, or an infection if you apply this product on an area of the skin that has eczema around a leg ulcer.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a leg ulcer

 

Storage Conditions Of Betnovate N Ointment

  • Store below 25°c
  • Don’t refrigerate
  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
